A UGC agency can help you produce creator content. A performance creative agency can connect customer insight, concepts, production and ongoing iteration across several ad formats. The useful question is where your team needs ownership. If you already know what to say and need people to film it, your brief is different from a brand that needs help deciding what to test next.
Start with the gap in your team
Imagine you have a folder full of creator videos, but the next brief still starts with: “Can we make something like the last winner?” You may have a strategy gap. If your team has a clear customer problem, script and test plan but cannot source suitable creators or organise production, you may have a production gap.
Neither agency label settles this for you. Some UGC agencies offer substantial strategy and iteration. Some performance creative agencies have a narrow production scope. Compare the people, decisions and deliverables included in the proposal.
Start by writing one sentence: “We need someone to own ___ so our team can ___.” That sentence is a better buying brief than a target number of videos.
What work are you asking the agency to own?
Use this table as a starting point for the conversation, not a universal definition of either type of agency.
| Decision | A creator-production brief | A broader performance-creative brief |
|---|---|---|
| Customer insight | Your team supplies the audience and message. | The agency helps identify customer motivations and objections. |
| Concepts | Creator content answers an agreed brief. | Distinct ideas are developed around different reasons to buy. |
| Production | Creator sourcing, filming and editing are central. | Creator video can sit alongside statics, founder content, product demonstrations and animation. |
| Learning | Your team may need to interpret results and write the next brief. | Creative review and iteration should be explicit responsibilities. |
| Media buying | Ask whether it is included. | Ask whether it is included. The label alone does not tell you. |
Also clarify what “UGC” means in the proposal. A commissioned creator video, a genuine customer review and an influencer publishing to their own audience are different deliverables. Do not assume a creator-production fee includes distribution to that creator's followers.
A practical framework: the five-owner check
Before choosing a partner, put a name beside each of these five responsibilities. Use your own team, your media buyer or the proposed agency. A blank space shows the work that still needs an owner.
- Insight: who reviews customer questions, reviews, objections and the offer?
- Direction: who chooses the concepts, supporting proof and reasons to buy?
- Production: who briefs creators, approves footage and delivers usable ads?
- Testing: who launches ads, assigns budget and records what is being tested?
- Learning: who turns results into a decision and the next creative brief?
If direction and learning already have capable owners, focused creator production may be enough. If those responsibilities are repeatedly postponed, adding more footage will also add work for the person who must make sense of it.
The same checklist works when two agencies collaborate. Agree the handoff and one decision-maker for each stage. A shared dashboard helps only when someone is responsible for acting on it.
An example: one hair tool, several reasons to buy
Consider a fictional heatless-curl product. Your first concept demonstrates the evening routine and the styling process. A second shows how the product fits into a busy morning. A third explains the product's fit and use, answering questions that might otherwise delay a purchase.
These are concept hypotheses, not proven results. Each needs accurate product information and honest demonstrations. A creator can bring any of them to life, but changing the creator while keeping the same script does not automatically give you a new reason to buy.
A production brief might request a demonstration filmed from agreed angles. A broader creative strategy brief would also explain the customer question, the proposed message, the proof needed and how the team will judge what it learns. This is especially useful when a product needs explanation before someone feels ready to buy.
Choose the format around the message
Creator video is one way to make a product understandable and relatable. Founder-led footage can explain why a product was developed. Product photography and statics can make an offer easy to scan. Animation can clarify a mechanism that is difficult to film, provided the explanation is accurate.
AI can help explore visual directions, create variations and speed parts of production. Real people remain valuable for actual product use, perspective and believable communication. An AI-generated scene should never be presented as a real customer's experience.
At EVOKE, we combine real creators and filming with AI-assisted creative production. The mix follows the brief and the brand, and creator and production requirements are agreed in the scope. Explore how we approach UGC for paid ads.
Five questions to ask before signing
- What counts as a new concept? Ask the agency to distinguish an idea from a new hook, crop or edit.
- Who makes strategic decisions? Meet the person who will stay close to your account.
- What happens after delivery? Clarify feedback, revisions and performance-led iterations.
- What rights are included? Confirm paid channels, duration, territories, raw footage and creator-account permissions where relevant.
- How will you work with our media buyer? Agree the review cadence, naming and information needed for the next brief.
Ask to see relevant work with the context around it. A polished video tells you about execution. A case explaining the brief, comparison period and measured result gives you more to assess. Our DTC beauty case and wellness case are starting points for that conversation.
Where EVOKE fits
EVOKE is a boutique performance creative agency for established DTC brands, with particular experience in beauty & wellness. Our work combines creative strategy, concepts, ad production and ongoing iterations, with direct senior involvement and an in-house DTC growth perspective.
We can work alongside your existing media buyer. If you need creative and media buying in one engagement, we can scope them together. The first conversation is about the gap in your team, your current creative and the business problem the next round of ads needs to address.
Questions you might ask
Can a UGC agency also provide creative strategy?
Yes. Service labels overlap. Ask who researches the customer, chooses concepts and interprets performance, then confirm those responsibilities in the scope.
Do we need a new media buyer to work with a performance creative agency?
No. A creative agency can work alongside your current buyer. EVOKE supports this setup and can also scope creative and media buying together when needed.
Should we stop using UGC if we hire a performance creative agency?
No. Creator-led content can remain an important part of the mix. The aim is to choose formats that communicate different messages clearly and learn from their performance.
